Big Important Developments, Part 1

I should have posted about this earlier, but I am very happy and proud to announce that Tom's manuscript was accepted for publication by the University of North Carolina Press last week. Tom has been working on this project almost as long as I've known him, and getting to this point has been a long and sometimes painful process. Since I didn't even have the patience to finish my dissertation, I am incredibly impressed that he was able to finish his dissertation, basically rewrite the whole thing, revise the revised manuscript and incorporate multiple changes requested by the book's reviewers, all while teaching and without going completely insane (I'm not saying he didn't go a little bit insane at points). Yes, this is what academics do, but observing the publishing process up close has shown me that a book is a lot like a sausage: the final product is a neat and tidy little package, but really, you don't want to know everything that goes into it.

So, yay Tom! The book, entitled A Republic in Time (subtitle TBD) is scheduled to appear in UNCP's Spring 2008 catalog. Since the primary audience is lit scholars, it's not the kind of book you're likely to find on the shelf at your local Chapters or Barnes & Noble. But it will be out there! At the very least, I'll put on my hostess hat and throw a launch party in our living room when it comes out.
